		DESCRIPTION OF THE CLUES

The object of the treasure hunt is to locate a series of clues.  Each clue
contains the year, 1983, in the upper right-hand corner, printed in red
ink on a 4x6" index card.  In the upper left-hand corner will be the clue
number, which will be circled.  Any index card failing to meet this
description is not a clue for this year's treasure hunt.

In the middle of each clue will be a description of where the subsequent
clue is located.  This description comprises mixed words and numbers. You
will use a dictionary of number-phrase pairs to decode the description: by
locating each number in the dictionary and subsituting the corresponding
phrase for that number in the description.

At the bottom of each clue there will be a set of dictionary updates.
After you have decoded the description of the location of the next clue,
you are to take each of the updates (which will be number-phrase pairs),
locate the number-phrase pair in your current dictionary corresponding to
the number in the update, and substitute the phrase in the update for the
phrase in the dictionary.

		THE DICTIONARY

You will be given an initial dictionary of number-phrase pairs, and you
will use this dictionary to decode the first clue.

Notice that if you find a clue out of order, you may decode that clue
with the wrong dictionary. This may result in a nonsense clue, or it may
simply lead you astray. You are advised to remember where each update
to the dictionary was made.

It is important to remember that you are to decode the current clue
with the dictionary as it exists when you find the clue; you should update
your dictionary after decoding the current clue.

		NUMBERS

Only numerals in the description part of the clue are to be translated
using the dictionary. The only way that a number can be quoted is by spelling
out its name in English. So, if you see a clue that says:

	go to room 222.

This means you must look up 222 in your current dictionary to find its true
meaning. The dictionary does not contain number-number pairs.
Contrast the above clue with:

	go to room two-twenty-two.

		TREASURE HUNT AREA

The treasure hunt area extends no more than 50 yards outside the ring
defined by the circular driveway. Floors in the building are numbered
from the top down, so the top deck is deck one; you go downstairs to deck two.
The office areas on the first floor, excluding the machine room, are part of the
treasure hunt area. This is the area directly behind the front porch
where the hunt will begin. All other interior parts of the building are
off-limits.

		HOW TO WIN

You may find a clue that has several possible actions. In every such case,
one of the actions will point you to the next clue. The other may be a short
circuit: if you perform the action specified (and if you have decoded the
clues correctly up to that point), you will automatically win.

If you do not perform any of the short-circuit actions, then you must find
all of the clues in the proper order. Once you have found the final word,
you have completed the course. The team that arrives back at the porch and
reads the clues, in correct order, to one of us (ARK or RPG) wins. In
addition, you must have followed a correct path.
